One computer managed to get infected with a fake Windows Security Alert malware program.  After using Malwarebytes to clean it, the machine still would not display web pages (in ANY application: IE, Safari for Win, Firefox, Opera).

After checking to make sure the HOSTS file was in tact (it was not, so I removed the errant entries), the system would still not access web pages.

The fix?  CONTROL PANEL > INTERNET OPTIONS > CONNECTIONS > LAN SETTINGS

Inside there, the machine was being told to use a proxy but the proxy was empty (because I had deleted the bad entries).  UNCHECK the proxy boxes and that fixed it.

Side note: Other things to consider -

  • reset the tcp/ip stack
  • flush the dns
  • reset all Internet options (under the ADVANCED tab) back to default
  • delete all entries in the "trusted sites" under SECURITY in Internet Options
